Study on preparation of carbon fiber reinforced polycarbonate composite by twin screw extruder

Carbon fiber fabric reinforced polyphenylene sulfide (CFF/PPS) composites are important thermoplastic aerospace composites. The difficulty is to improve the wetting and interfacial strength between carbon fiber (CF) and matrix.

The effect of CF surface modification on the bonding strength of CFF/PPS interface was discussed, and the modification effects of heat treatment depulping and three surface modifiers on carbon fiber monofilament and CFF/PPS composites were compared.

The surface modification effect of CF was evaluated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), monofilaments strength test, composite statics test and dynamic mechanical analysis, and a method for preparing high performance CFF/PPS thermoplastic aerospace composites based on CF surface modification was established.

The interlaminar shear strength, bending strength, tensile strength, modulus and impact strength of the composites were 91.4MPa, 953.7MPa, 797.4MPa, 68.4GPa and 58.3kJ/m2, respectively.

A high performance polycarbonate/carbon fiber composite with uniform carbon fiber distribution and moderate length-diameter ratio was prepared by using a twin-screw extruder to compound staple fiber and polycarbonate by reactive extrusion method.

Used the gas phase oxidation method, liquid phase oxidation method, liquid phase oxidation + complex legal and silane coupling agent on the carbon fiber modification for their early using scanning electron microscope to observe the surface morphology of modified carbon fiber, analysis of different methods on the carbon fiber surface treatment effect, the carbon fiber surface morphology after different treatments are obviously different, liquid-phase oxidation compared with gas phase oxidation method, the former after processing the carbon fiber.

The surface roughness is obvious, and the surface is smooth after liquid phase oxidation and activation by silane coupling agent.

It will be treated as three kinds of carbon fiber/polycarbonate composite after the physical and mechanical properties testing, indicates that liquid phase oxidation + silane coupling agent prepared composite processing method of the optimum comprehensive performance of composite and carbon fiber content is only 5%, compared with pure polycarbonate yield strength and elastic modulus increased by 18% and 62% respectively, and determine the optimal treatment method of the carbon fiber, in order to one step research lays the foundation.The effects of different processing techniques on polycarbonate/carbon fiber composites were studied. The results show that the screw rotation speed has little effect on the properties of the composites, indicating that increasing the rotation speed can improve the mixing efficiency without affecting the strengthening effect of carbon fiber.

The effect of processing temperature on the properties of the composites was studied. The mechanical properties of the polycarbonate/carbon fiber composites were slightly improved at higher processing temperature.

The effects of the initial length and content of carbon fiber on the composite were studied. The results showed that the longer the cut length of carbon fiber, the larger the aspect ratio of carbon fiber in the composite, and the better the properties of the composite.
